BCCI approves proposed home series against the West Indies

The Working Committee meeting of the BCCI on Sunday approved the West Indies visit between the Australia ODI series in October and India's tour of South Africa in December-January. The West Indies will play two Tests and five One Day International matches during their short visit. The board also approved tours to New Zealand and England in the month of January-February and July-September respectively."The Working Committee has approved a proposed home series against the West Indies in November 2013," the BCCI tweeted. Another statement released said "The Indian team's tour of New Zealand for two Tests and five ODIs in January/February 2014 was approved. The Indian team's tour of England for five Tests/five ODIs/one T20 International, from July to September 2014, was approved." Sachin Tendulkar, who is two Tests short of becoming the first cricketer to feature in 200 Tests, was originally expected to reach the milestone on the South Africa tour. It is now speculated that Tendulkar might call it a day after playing the two Tests against the West Indies, in Kolkata and his hometown Mumbai, thereby ending his 24-year international career.

N Srinivasan's desperate bid to return as BCCI President was thwarted with the under-fire Board deciding to call off its Working Committee meeting in New Delhi on Friday. The BCCI decided to appeal in the Supreme Court against the Bombay high court order, which declared its IPL spot-fixing probe "illegal and unconstitutional". The decision to call off the working committee meeting was taken after a series of discussions among the top brass of the BCCI. Jagmohan Dalmiya, who was named the interim chief after Srinivasan had stepped aside pending an internal inquiry into the IPL spot-fixing scandal, will continue in the position for the time being.

In a significant move which will have far-reaching implications, the BCCI on Saturday amended its constitution to do away with the zonal rotational policy for electing its president and allow a second term to office bearers subject to re-election. The decision to do away with zonal system is primarily due to the fact that two zones -- namely East and Central don’t have candidates of suitable stature for the post. The change to the election process of the president was originally mooted by former BCCI president Shashank Manohar to the board members informally. The second rule change in the constitution being mooted is to allow the office bearers to have an extra term.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has terminated the contract of the Indian Premier League franchise Deccan Chargers. The BCCI said the decision to terminate the IPL contract of Deccan Chargers was taken after “careful deliberation” and only due to the absolute inability of the franchise to effectively run the team. With the BCCI-Deccan Chargers stand-off now becoming a legal battle, the Cricket Board on Saturday decided to add a new team for the coming IPL season while leaving it to the court to rule on the beleaguered franchise's participation.

Indian captain, Unmukt Chand, scored a century to take India to their third under-19 title after his team frittered away the early advantage as defending champions Australia recovered from a shaky start to post a competitive 225 for 8 in the final of the ICC Under-19 Cricket World Cup on Sunday. Courtesy a magnificent unbeaten 111 by Unmukt and his unbroken partnership of 130 runs with glovesman Smit Patel, India overhauled the competitive target on a bouncy strip with 14 balls to spare.This was India U-19s first triumph after Mohammed Kaif and Virat Kohli led their respective teams to victory in 2000 and 2008 editions respectively.

India's right-wing party Shiv Sena today opposed the resumption of Indo-Pak cricketing ties, while the Maharashtra unit of Congress also expressed reservations, indirectly opposing the series, saying that BCCI should consider the sentiments of people. Shiva Sena and most of the local political parties strongly opposed the tour saying India should not play cricket against Pakistan until the perpetrators of 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks are not brought to justice. BJP reacted to the agreement between BCCI and its Pakistani counterpart PCB by lodging a strong protest against Islamabad's failure to act against 26/11 perpetrators and other terrorists, but without opposing the restoration of cricketing ties. Legendary Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar went to the extent of saying it would be a “meaningless series” adding “Being a Mumbaikar, I feel what is the urgency when there has been no co-operation from the other side (on the 26/11 terror strike). Why is it that only India has to move on?” Mumbai won’t be a host during the Pakistan tour.

After five years of no cricket, India and Pakistan will play again during the Christmas break of 2012. The Board of Cricket Control in India (BCCI) at its working committee meeting on Monday took the decision that India will host Pakistan to play three One Day International and two T20 matches in December 2012-January 2013. The plan, as per BCCI vice-president Rajiv Shukla's announcement, is to hold the three ODIs in Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata, and the Twenty20 matches in Ahmedabad and Bangalore. He also added that it has the government's nod. Reacting to the BCCI's announcement, PCB chief Zaka Ashraf told the Pakistani media that it was a welcome step. "I am glad this has come through," Ashraf said.Bilateral cricketing ties were snapped following the Mumbai terror attacks in November 2008, though the two countries have played each other in the World Cup, Champions Trophy and Asia Cup. The two countries last played a Test and ODI series way back in 2007. India pulled out of the 2009 cricket tour of Pakistan in the wake of the 26/11 attacks in Mumbai. India has a packed cricket schedule this year and the Indo-Pak matches will be accommodated in the middle of England's tour to India. England will finish playing Tests and the team will fly back for Christmas. They will be back in the New Year to play ODIs.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s side, the No. 1 Test side this time a year ago, have lost a position to slip to the fifth spot now in the latest ICC Test Championship rankings table. In the annual update which took place on Saturday, England still leads the table after they leapt 122 ratings points. The leaders can still be overhauled by South Africa in the forthcoming series which begins at The Oval Thursday. Domestic Calendar reshuffle

Challenger Trophy format changed

India's domestic cricket calendar has gone through a major reshuffle with the BCCI retaining the Duleep Trophy, which will be played before the Ranji Trophy, and the Irani Trophy moved to the end of each season. The Challenger Trophy format has also been changed with the winner of the Vijay Hazare Trophy being included as one of the three teams that play the Challenger.

New 3-group, 27-team format

India's premier domestic tournament, Ranji Trophy, has done away with the Elite and Plate Groups, and instead, will have three tiers of nine teams each. With this change the existing 27 first class teams will get to play eight matches each every season regardless of its ranking in the circuit. Under the old format introduced by BCCI's technical committee headed by former India batsman Sunil Gavaskar ten years ago, eight teams played seven league matches each, seven teams played six league matches each and the remaining 12 (Plate Division teams) played five each. In the new format nine of the top 15 Elite teams will make for the first nine teams in Tier 'A' and the remaining six teams will make for Tier 'B' . Three top Plate teams - according to the rankings as per the season gone by - will be promoted as the other three teams in Tier 'B' . Tier 'C' will consist of the remaining nine Plate Division teams.

‎After 16 years of steadfast service, Rahul Dravid, the former Indian captain, has announced his retirement from international and domestic first-class cricket at a press conference in Bangalore. The Karnataka batsman is 30th in all-time Test best list, having spent a total of 35 Tests and 226 days at the top, with the highest-rating of 892 which he achieved in March 2005, an ICC release stated. Among India batsmen, only Sunil Gavaskar (916) and Sachin Tendulkar (898) have achieved higher career ratings than Dravid. He was also the first recipient of the ICC Test Player of the Year and the ICC Cricketer of the Year (the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy) awards, presented in 2004 in London. The 39-year-old Rahul Dravid, nicknamed "The Wall" for his patient batting style, has scored 13,288 runs in 164 Tests since making his debut as a 23-year-old at Lord's in 1996, second only to compatriot and master batsman Sachin Tendulkar (15,470), and has made 36 centuries at an average of over 50. He has amassed a world record 19 century partnerships with Tendulkar and has been involved in 80 century partnerships with 18 different partners. In 344 one-day internationals, Dravid scored 10,899 runs, and was top scorer in the 1999 World Cup in England with 461. He captained India in 25 Tests and 79 ODIs between October 2005 and September 2007, during which time India won Test series in England and West Indies.Dravid will lead the Rajasthan Royals in this year's Indian Premier League 2012 which runs from 4 April to 27 May. Sahara withdraws Indian cricket sponsorship

Just ahead of the IPL auction, Sahara India ended their 11-year long sponsorship of Indian cricket team and withdrew their ownership from IPL franchise Pune Warriors. Sahara has requested the BCCI to pass on Pune Warriors team to some other interested party immediately. Sahara was paying Rs 3.34 crore per Test match, one-day international and Twenty20 International under the latest terms signed on on July 1, 2010. Virat Kohli has been India's leading scorer in the series with 300 runs in four Tests at 37.5, just above Sachin Tendulkar who scored 287 runs at 35.8. Sachin's performance can be rated well short of his high standards. Rahul Dravid scored 194 runs at an average of 24.25 while VVS Laxman struggled the most of the big three, scoring 155 with an average of only 19.37.

Larger bench of CIC likely to decide if BCCI is public authority or not

Decision of putting BCCI under Right to Information (RTI) ambit has been deferred till November 4. The Central Information Commission (CIC) is mulling the option of referring the case to a larger bench. While the sports minister is trying to bring the BCCI under the RTI Act umbrella, the BCCI is vehemently opposed to the idea and unlike other sports organizations in India, it has the money and the clout to back its stand.BCCI - which is one of the richest sports bodies in the world - enjoys tax-exemptions running into hundreds of crores on the cricket matches organised in the country arguing that they are promoting the sport as a charitable activity. The case relates to RTI applications filed by activist S C Agrawal and one Alok Varshney seeking details of working of the BCCI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has dropped the plan to rope in former India skipper Anil Kumble to teach life skills to players, a proposal that was first considered last year after the former cricketer made a presentation to top officials. The programme that included finance management, stress management, anti-doping code, media management and how to handle instant success would have cost Rs 2.9 lakh per player.

Sharad Pawar is new ICC president

Indian Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar took over the reins of the International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday, becoming the second Indian after Jagmohan Dalmiya to head the world cricket body. Pawar, a political heavyweight, will be the seventh ICC President, succeeding Englishman David Morgan who concluded his two-year term. Pawar and Morgan openly backed former Australian Prime Minister John Howard's nomination as ICC vice president which was rejected by the ICC board on Wednesday as the strong Asian block opposed the move. Earlier, Lord Colin Cowdrey (1989-93) and Clyde Walcott (1993-97), headed the ICC as chairman. Dalmiya (1997-2000) was the first ICC president followed by Malcolm Gray (2000-2003), Ehsan Mani (2003-2006), Percy Sonn (2006-2007) Ray Mali (2007-08) and Morgan (2008-10).

Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman join Yuvraj in the 16-man party to complete a formidable middle-order.
